It Happened in South Carolina is a collection of 30 action-packed stories from the long, colorful history of the Palmetto State. Stories range from its earliest colonial days through the American Revolution and the Civil War to the present day. This book features people and events that shaped not only South Carolina's future--but our country's personality as a whole. Meet Francis Marion, "Swamp Fox" of the Revolution, and Denmark Vesey, who daringly planned a slave revolt. Heroines like entrepreneur Eliza Pinckney and diarist Mary Chestnut are here, as well. Natural events like earthquakes and hurricanes are balanced by acts of individual courage, creativity and (sometimes comic) folly to show why South Carolina -- then and now -- is one of the most fascinating states in the Union.

From the Back Cover:
From the tragic tale behind the ghostly Gray Man who warns Pawleys Island residents of impending hurricanes to the story behind the birth of the dance craze known the world over as "The Charleston," It Happened in South Carolina takes readers on a behind-the-scenes tour of some of the fascinating characters and episodes that mark the Palmetto State's eventful past. Here you'll discover the escapades of "Gentleman Pirate" Stede Bonnet, who terrorized the coastline alongside the notorious Blackbeard. You'll also make the acquaintance of young Eliza Lucas, who changed the course of American history when she took charge of the family plantation at the tender age of sixteen. And you'll learn about the famous Haile Gold Mine, at one time the most successful producer of gold east of the Mississippi River.
In an easy-to-read style that is entertaining and informative, J. Michael McLaughlin and Lee Davis Todman recount some of the most captivating moments from South Carolina's history.
