K-Gr 3-A family of mallard ducks lives on a lake in the forest. Six of the young drakes pay attention during swimming and flying lessons, excelling in all subjects. Otis, however, is a dreamer, his mind usually wandering to the tadpoles, the hummingbirds, or the flowers. When the brothers meet the lovely Violet, they are all smitten, but none as much as Otis. When she laughs at his bungled attempt to bring her flowers, he runs away. Alone and lonely, he fends for himself through the winter and comes up with a plan to change his fate. By spring, when the ducks return to the lake, Otis has created a costume and a new persona for himself as "Jack Quack, Renegade Drake. Prince of the Forest, King of the Lake." When trouble arises, he saves the day, gets the girl (who has recognized him all along), and lives happily ever after. This sweet, predictable tale takes a dreamy duck with a slight case of ADD and turns him into a hero. The quirky watercolor artwork is filled with humorous touches. The text, however, is overly wordy for the format and a bit cumbersome to read aloud.
