Readers will also hear the voices of men and women alive today. They will see the beauties and hidden treasures of each state and hear the social issues and concerns faced by the residents.

Each book opens with a series of quotes by both contemporary residents and people from the past -- giving voice to the state's concerns, admiration for the people, love of the land, nostalgia for the past and excitement for the future.

From School Library Journal:
Grades 5-8--Bennett often does a good job of bringing some of Montana's residents to life, but just as often he draws the state with broad brushstrokes that don't quite fill in the picture. The emphasis is on the facts-the state's map, seal, climate, statistics, and natural flora and fauna. History fills only 20 of the 144 pages and shows Montana in the context of the entire United States. Lewis and Clark, whose journey is being celebrated across the state for the next few years, scarcely merit a page, and the Battle of Little Bighorn is fought in a paragraph. For all the parts the author doesn't get quite right, however, there are many places where this book shines. Bennett shows the importance of Native Americans, women, the Chinese immigrants, and many other workers in the creation of this state. The photographs and illustrations are clear, often historical. Quotes from all sorts of Montanans bring life to the text, and there is a prominent section of famous residents from all walks of life, including artist Charles Russell, Evel Knievel, and Jeannette Rankin. The book also includes a tour of the Treasure State. All in all, it's a serviceable addition to any library's shelf of state books.
