This book, however, manages to capture some of the exuberance of the great home-run reord chase of the 1998 baseball season. It includes all sorts of action-packed color pictures and provides a fast-moving account of the home-run battle between Sosa and McGwire. Alternating chapters focus on the contrasting backgrounds and personalities of the two stars. McGwire grew up in a prosperous Southern California home. Sosa grew up poor in the Dominican Republic. McGwire tends to be reserved and a very disciplined hitter, whereas Sosa seems rather carefree and has always been something of a hacker at the plate. The colorful layout, sprinkled with quotes and statistics, is sure to spark interest.
