Gr 5-7--Both of these books have the same format, which stands out more than the content. Each double-page spread is meant to look like either a computer screen or an open and unorganized file, scattered with "case studies," details of past crimes, good photographs in full color, and a part of a continuing hypothetical case used to highlight the issues under discussion. The structure sacrifices depth of information for trendy graphics. Drug Trafficking is the better of the two, because the facts are arranged in a more understandable manner. "Case studies" are short, but they do back up the material with pertinent examples. The author describes how people smuggle drugs and techniques government agencies use to stop drug trafficking. Terrorism covers the history of terrorism, different groups, techniques, and how to combat it. This title is more fractured, with many see references to later pages that break up any semblance of flow of information. The "case studies" are little more than two-sentence examples of terrorist crimes, leaving more questions than answers. The Oklahoma City bombing is barely mentioned, and the book is so focused on presenting examples of many terrorist acts that it leaves out any in-depth analysis of the crimes or the effect of terrorism on society. Two titles with a broad scope, too many scenarios, and too few details or outcomes.
