Glowing watercolors plus a wealth of intriguing details, humorous touches, and action enliven each double-page spread. A variety of questions, brain teasers, and games invite close examination of the pictures and pensive consideration of the facts. Questions float in and around the scenes, with answers to most of them appearing at the base of the page. Running throughout are the antics of a cloaked "assassin" who causes havoc in his quest to kill the queen. Detective skills are tested when the lineup of suspicious looking characters appears on the "A Host of Answers" page. By book's end, students will have a basic understanding of typical castle design and structure, eating and entertainment habits of the nobles, and siege conduct and defense. While less information-packed than Stephen Biesty's Cross-Sections Castle (DK, 1994), this title is much more colorful than the construction and life history of Castle (Houghton, 1977) by David Macaulay and dramatically more interactive than either of those books.
