PreSchool-K?A strange little book. At Bear Kindergarten, Little Bear wants some pink clay so he can make a pig, but his best friend Brandon won't share it with him. Tensions escalate until Little Bear smashes Brandon's clay flamingos. Brandon flushes the rest of the clay down the toilet and chaos ensues, with Little Bear pulling a Mike Tyson and biting Brandon's ear. The teacher finally intervenes but only to bind the wound and to tell the boys that "friends shouldn't bite...or fight." All ends well, eventually, with Little Bear and Brandon deciding to be friends again, but it's a long, bizarre journey getting there, with teacher and parents all playing it pretty low key, considering the rumpus the two cubs caused. The writing is sturdy, without much emotion or action, and the flat pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are without any sense of motion or action, even in the fight scenes. More emphasis seems to be placed on how bad it feels to be angry at someone, rather than on the fact that beating someone up isn't necessarily the first course of action.?Christine A.
