Lassiter's accessible introduction to anthropology encourages students to evaluate its relevance in our increasingly complex world. Part I focuses on the underlying assumptions and concepts that have driven anthropological theory and practice since its modern inception. Part II explores cross-cultural human issues showing how anthropological studies offer relevant insight into human beings and valuable models for thinking and acting. Invitation to Anthropology is an ideal text for undergraduate students, easily supplemented with case studies in anthropology.

About the Author:
Eric Lassiter is Professor of Humanities and Anthropology at Marshall University Graduate College in South Charleston, WV. He is the Director of Graduate Humanities and is the author of The Power of Kiowa Song: A Collaborative Ethnography.
Review:
Invitation to Anthropology is a good, solid introduction to standard American cultural anthropology, no less enlightening and often more engaging than its more flashy competitors. (Journal Of The Royal Anthropological Institute)

Lassiter's introduction to anthropology promises to keep deep and strong contact with real currents of today's life and to pull students into those currents. (James L. Peacock)

Ideal for non-specialist general readers with a passing curiosity on the subject, Invitation to Anthropology, is confidently recommended as being a quite practical, well-researched and solid beginning manual to this diverse and fascinating field. (Wisconsin Bookwatch (February 2003))

Lassiter offers a fresh and accessible approach to anthropology for both the academic and the non-specialist. His evangelical message about the relevance of anthropology is timely and engaging. Moving beyond the popular stereotypes of Indiana-Jones-ish anthropologists documenting fertility dances among remote tribes, Lassiter illustrates the varied and valuable applications of the anthropological perspective for real world problems on the local, regional and global scale. (Ray, Celeste)

Lassiter offers Invitation to Anthropology to a hip-hop generation that already lives in a globalized world and is forced to grapple with complicated and fractured notions of race and culture everyday. Gone are the dated assumptions of race, language, culture, yet he maintains the best that anthropology has to offer in terms of the four-field approach, a commitment to the beauty of human diversity. Lassiter extends the rich tradition of public anthropology. It is fresh, exciting, relevant and extremely useful to students and faculty alike. (Lee D. Baker)
