This companion to the Academy Award-nominated film ''Winged Migration'' is designed for young readers. Every year billions of birds set out on journeys across the globe. They travel great distances, following thousands of different routes over every continent, in search of food, warmth, & their nesting grounds. This book tells the fascinating stories of 15 of these birds -- from the arctic tern, which travels from the North Pole to the South Pole & back again, to the bar-headed goose, which flies over the Himalayas, the highest mountains in the world. Includes informative maps & sidebars, & an hour-long CD of the birds' calls. ''Go behind the scenes of this incredible three-year film-making adventure.'' Beautifully designed!

From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-8–This oversized book that is meant to complement Jacques Perrin's documentary film of the same name is clearly a packaged product and does not focus on the film or even specifically on migration. Colorful spreads introduce 15 species with titles that paint a visual picture of the bird (e.g., Common Cranes are "Dancers of the Taiga"). The text includes first-person stories from the birds' perspective, historical tales, mythology, stories from a human's point of view, and some straight nonfiction. Photographs from the film showing birds flying, resting, congregating, and eating surround the text and create a sense of flight throughout the pages. While the book may be fun to dip into, it has little informational value as the maps are crude and confusing and the pictures that tie into fact boxes are too small to be of any use. An accompanying CD, attached to the front page, provides a few minutes of calls for 13 of the species and would be interesting to listen to while browsing, but the cuts on the disk do not follow the order of the book. A brief appended section gives information on the making of the film, including storyboards and photographs of the photographers on location. This title is more appropriate as a gift for young bird-watchers than for libraries.–Susan Oliver, Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library System, FL
