About the Author:
Barbara A. Somervill is a Capstone Press author.
From Booklist:
Gr. 6-9. In this entry in the Signature Lives series, Somervill presents a candid introduction to her famous Renaissance subject. Her text has a casual tone, and her direct, sometimes colloquial language will capture some reluctant readers. Occasionally, she presents strong opinion as fact. For example, she refers to Michelangelo as a "know-it-all" and "an avid complainer," comments that aren't supported in the appended source notes, which refer only to direct quotations. Still, Somervill offers a compelling portrait that humanizes her subject and, through vivid detail, gives a sense of the physical work and taxing life of a Renaissance artist. Color images depict key figures as well as the artist's greatest works, and the elegant book design employs black, linen-textured endpapers, thick paper stock, and chapter heads printed in rolling script that resembles the mark of quill pens. Extensive back matter includes an illustrated time line, source notes, a glossary, a bibliography, and an Internet site that will lead researchers to more Web resources. Gillian Engberg
