About the Author:

Brian Thomsen was a founding editor of the Questar Science Fiction line of books, and served as managing fiction editor at TSR, Inc.; he also wrote over 30 short stories, and collaborated with Julius Schwartz on Schwartz's autobiography. He also worked as the publisher for TSR's Periodicals Department at one point. As an author he was a Hugo Award nominee.

The 16 original stories gathered here are classic escapist fare, taking us far from the concerns of here and now. What with space pirates and daring rescues, they are the heirs to earlier generations of space-going swashbucklers. As such, they provide a lovely means of whiling away dull hours, imaginatively daring distant "seas" of stars instead of any watery main. They make no pretensions to literary grandeur, though coeditor Thomsen's "Fragments of the Log of Captain Amasa Delano" extols the virtues of literacy, and Simon Hawke's "Sargasso" stands out for its setting on a patched space station on the edge of civilization that is named after the wide, clinging sea of earthly maritime legend. There are a couple of big names--Mike Resnick and Andre Norton--among the contributors, but each story delivers some of what all promise--adventure and exploration.
