Bill Tyrrell, sometime war correspondent and captain of the elderly cutter Vixen, has made it across the North Sea in a gale with a crew of eight unruly teenagers on release from the Probation Service. Now heading from the Thames estuary to historic Chatham docks for the Tall Ships celebrations, little can go wrong. But in the darkness, Vixen collides with the wreck of a small dinghy and something snags the propeller...a body. It seems that Bill's past is about to catch up with him.

About the Author:
Sam Llewellyn worked as an editor and fine art dealer until he decided that life was too short. Since then, his novels, published in twelve languages, have earned him a reputation as one of the world's master storytellers and writers of maritime thrillers. Many of his books are founded in personal experience. While researching them he has (amongst other things) chased pirates in the South China Sea, raced big-money multi-hulls in France, and run away from cocaine dealers in Spain.

As well as writing novels, Llewellyn has published half a dozen children's books, and works as a journalist for British and American newspapers and magazines such as the London Times and Daily Telegraph. He is a keen gardener, with added interests in ornithology and history and has also sailed yachts - several of which he built himself - all over the world. He now lives with his wife, award-winning children's writer and novelist Karen Wallace, and their two sons in a medieval house in the Welsh border country.

From Kirkus Reviews:
Domestic and international political storms make waters treacherous for a hard-yachting British journalist--in another seagoing thriller from the author of Dead Eye, etc. Emotionally whipped by the endless war in the Middle East, prize-winning reporter Bill Tyrrell has retreated to the smaller, more reasonable world of his vintage yacht Vixen, which he's chartered out to a save-the-young-hoodlums charity. Tyrrell and Vixen regularly take on crews composed exclusively of London's toughest young delinquents and show them that there are possibilities beyond street violence. Time and again the sea and the yacht work magic with the punks, but Vixen's latest cruise has run aground on politics. Returning to England in the middle of the night, the yacht runs over a dinghy, snaring the body of an Estonian naval cadet assigned to one of the Tall Ships with which Tyrrell has been operating. The ambitious admiral in charge of the youth-rescue operation is furious over the bad publicity, but that's the least of Tyrrell's problems: His creepy, politically connected younger brother now threatens to sell Vixen out from under Tyrrell, and, it turns out, the late young Estonian was looking for Tyrrell himself in order to give him evidence of sexual corruption at the highest political levels. Tyrrell doesn't know where the evidence is, but vicious enforcers from a neo-fascist security outfit think he does; Vixen is nearly destroyed; and more bodies begin to drop. His own life threatened by the goons, Tyrrell refuses to drop his private investigation of the incidents that have become deeply personal and more complicated, linking events of the present to the disappearance of Tyrrell's spy-sailor father in the Baltic years ago. Answers to mysteries old and new seem to lie in Estonia, where glasnost is just kicking in, where a beautiful Estonian policewoman may be in danger, and toward which Tyrrell and a fresh crew of toughs set sail. Very British and very good. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
