Jake Murdock is a small Wyoming rancher with big ambitions. The only thing he lacks is money. Bill Lang, a hired gun, has been severely wounded in a confrontation with the Flynn clan, so Jake takes him back to his ranch. It is there that Bill meets Ellie, the mixed-blood woman with whom Jake lives.

The situation is complicated by the growing friendship between Bill and Jake, one that Jake wants to result in a partnership. And Ellie is another problem; Bill falls in love with her, and Jake ultimately plans to desert her for a more socially acceptable white woman. In the meantime, there is an outbreak of war with Sioux bands that have left the reservation. A thrilling account of frontier life and the changes it imposed on those who chose to seek their fortune in a time of turbulence.

About the Author:
Wayne D. Overholser: Wayne D. Overholser (1906 1996) won three Spur Awards from the Western Writesrs of America and has a long list of fine Western titles to his credit. Buckaroo’s Code was his first Western novel and remains one of his best. His stores are based on a solid knowledge of the history and customs of the nineteenth-century West, particularly when set in his two favorite Western states, Oregon and Colorado.

From Booklist:
Overholser, who died in 1996, was a prolific writer of western fiction, both under his own name and under a variety of pseudonyms. This offering features a hired gun who, after a close scrape (he was almost gunned down by a band of renegades), tries to settle down at a Wyoming ranch. But he finds that the course of peaceful retirement, not to mention true love, doesn't exactly run smooth. Beginning in the late 1870s and covering a couple of decades, the story works a familiar but ever-resonant western theme: simple values made complicated by a rapidly modernizing world. David Pitt
