PreSchool-Grade 1-Hugo, a caterpillar, wishes he were a lion. He practices his roar and puffs himself up, but the other animals do not take him seriously. Finally, when the dejected protagonist looks down into the river and utters one final roar, his fish friend mistakes him for a lion and swims off in fear. Hugo then realizes that being fierce is not so hot after all, and that "I'm glad I'm only a caterpillar." The message of being happy with oneself is not new, and this poorly written story does not break any ground. Bartlett's bright, childlike paintings show the endearing little guy's trials and tribulations with great humor and empathy. Double-page spreads at the beginning and end of the book offer adults ideas for reading with children as well as activities related to the story. Unfortunately, awkward sentences combined with missing punctuation mar this marginal tale.
