Using early photographs and prose extracts from writings of the time, this book gives an insight into the attitudes, opinions and habits of the Irish at the beginning of the 20th century, and brings their ordinary concerns and activities back to life. The Ireland that took shape during the 19th century excited a wide range of intense responses. Its extremes of grandeur and ugliness, poverty and wealth, provoked strong reactions from visitors and provided an inexhaustible topic for writers who knew the country well. The selection of illustrations brought together for this book record the contrasts of the era. The pictures show the aristocracy, the professionals, the city-workers, the rural people, and the farmers and laborers whose livelihoods depended on the land. They also offer a glimpse of trends in fashion and entertainment, and recall changing modes of transport and types of work at the end of the 19th century.

From Library Journal:
For this latest in Sutton's "Old Photographs" series, Harkness has collected black-and-white photographs from over 100 sources, public and private. The photos are both official and casual; the subjects are the people, cities, countryside, and events in Irish life of the 19th century (though some photos are credited in the early 20th century). From landscapes to group portraits and slices of life, the photos are accompanied by text, short excerpts from Irish writers writing (appropriately) about old Ireland. The pictures are sometimes ordinary but rarely dull; one captures life in a small pottery company, another shows how an engineer once tried solving the puzzle of the ancient stone circles, yet another shows a young man running for a train at a rural station. While neither the text nor the photos break new ground, they make an entertaining collection that will be a popular addition to most public libraries.ARobert C.
