Australian-born, British-based journalist John Pilger began making documentaries in 1970 and continues to report on the trouble spots of the world, drawing attention to injustice where he finds it. Hayward, the author of several books related to British television (e.g., Who's Who on Television), provides a detailed account of Pilger's award-winning television work through July 2001. Organized around the subject matter of Pilger's films, the book's chapters range from countries he returned to regularly, such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Great Britain, Australia, and the United States, to topical areas like "flashpoints," including the famine in Bangladesh or the tyranny he documented in Czechoslovakia, East Timor, and Burma. Hayward describes all of the programs, their reception, and the controversy they provoked within the context of contemporary British television. The appendix includes a list of Pilger's TV documentaries and awards. This is the first book to analyze Pilger's work, and its specialized coverage will be of most interest to academic audiences.
