Review:
Here, there and everywhere, human beings are picking themselves up from the rubble of capital's eco-destruction and assembling the means for a worthwhile existence. Derek Wall does a beautiful job of weaving these threads into a strong fabric. The children of the future will look back on Babylon and Beyond with gratitude. -- Joel Kovel, Distinguished Professor of Social Studies, Bard College, New York and author of The Enemy of Nature: The End of Capitalism or the End of the World? Derek Wall has produced a thoughtful and inspiring guide to capitalism and anti-capitalism. This really is the first book that carefully explains the different varieties of anti-capitalist thought including green localism, ecosocialism and Hardt and Negri's autonomism. Drawing upon his experience as an economist he makes the most seemingly obscure ideas clear, while showing that there are practical alternatives to neo-liberalism and old fashioned socialism. I thoroughly recommed that you read Babylon and Beyond. -- Caroline Lucas, Green MP for Brighton Pavilion Funny, lateral and unique - an erudite Green primer on global justice. The Idiot's Idiot's Guide. -- Matthew Tempest, Political Correspondent, Guardian Unlimited Usually the green perspective is simply tagged on to the red. Derek Wall is that rare breed: a real red-green hybrid. In this book, his eco-marxism comes alive as he guides us through the major issues and leading theorists with a lightness of touch and personal warmth which makes even the most complicated of arguments accessible. -- Hilary Wainwright, Editor of Red Pepper There are far too many books on anti-capitalism out there already - but with Babylon and Beyond, Derek Wall has removed the need to read most of them. Just read this one: a succinct, intelligent and witty summary of what it's all about. -- Paul Kingsnorth, author of One No, Many Yeses: A Journey to the Heart of the Global Resistance Movement A synthesis of Red and Green is the future of progressive politics. Wall illuminates the interface of ecological and socialist ideas; divining common threads and offering the hope of a democratic, just and sustainable future for humankind. -- Peter Tatchell, human rights campaigner
