They are similar in factual content to Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler's The Irish American Family Album (1995; o.p.) and The Scandinavian American Family Album (1997, both Oxford), but on a more accessible reading level. The handsome, wide format contains sepia-toned period photographs that fade into the page, along with full-color reproductions of various objects, from a shamrock plant to Danish-made reed shoes. Sidebars contain short first-person accounts. The interesting texts display some inconsistencies when citing figures, and topics are sometimes mentioned briefly in more than one place. Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish Immigrants treats all groups together, rather than each separately. The organization and the inclusion of recipes and suggested activities (growing potatoes in a pot, making Scandinavian flags, doing basic genealogy) make these volumes a good browsing choice.
