Since Jack is a budding scientist, his mom wants him to understand exactly what her tests and treatments are all about and makes it a point to have the doctors and nurses show him and his sister all they can. Meanwhile, there’s a developing romance with his best friend, Anna; a heartfelt project on Vietnam with his friend Chris; adjusting to a new stepdad and stepbrother; and a potato-onion hybrid called a ponto. With this much going on, it can be easy to lose sight of the main objective, but the discussion about his moms cancer most often takes center stage. Given that most books about parental cancer are for younger children, this book makes it easier for independent readers to understand their feelings and know that it is acceptable to have fun and enjoy life while a parent recovers.
