From Library Journal:
Copeland presents the life and selected works of Uno Chiyo, born in 1897 and still writing today. The biographical section gives a fascinating portrait of an unconventional woman who shocked society with her three marriages and numerous love affairs, described quite faithfully in her short stories, novellas, and novels. Winner of some of Japan's most prestigious literary awards, Uno was also a successful magazine publisher ( Style ) and continues to design kimonos. The three translations span decades of Uno's writing career. "The Puppet Maker" (1942) is a journalistic account of the life of a masterful octogenarian bunraku puppet maker. "The Sound of the Wind" (1969) is the story of a woman wed at age 16 to the profligate son of a rich provincial family who moves his mistress into their home. "The Powder Box" (1967), the most autobiographical of the selections, recounts Uno's life with the painter Togo Seiji, whom she met soon after his famous failed attempt to commit double "love suicide" with a young woman from a prominent family. This is truly engrossing reading that gives insight into Uno's writing and her life as a modern woman in traditional Japan.
