The author is thankful that he knew the sport of wildfowling at its very best, when the lonely wastes of the Wash were thronged with fowl in winter - especially the great battalions of pink-feet which came in at dawn from the sandbanks. Alas, many of the great haunts of wildfowl are now patrolled by irresponsible men who call themselves sportsmen but who shoot at anything that flies - including birds now on the protected list. Denys Watkins Pitchford MBE (1905-1990) was born at Lamport, Northamptonshire. His first book was published in 1937.
