MacDonald presents an indispensable guide to creating an ornamental kitchen garden--also known by its French name, potager. The most elaborate of these is the Potager du Roi at Versailles, built for Louis XIV in 1683 and still in existence. MacDonald lists 73 vegetables that can be grown, from more common ones--such as beans, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, onions, peas, and tomatoes--to more unusual ones, such as fennel and quinoa. There is information on each plant's life span, hardiness, height and width, foliage, and soil and feeding requirements. The author suggests combining flowers, whether edible or not, with the vegetables to provide color in the garden. Also recommended for the garden are a few herbs, fruits, and nuts. MacDonald gives detailed instructions on design, planning, and planting, on what she calls hedges and edges (to be used as boundaries for each bed), and on paths and structures. Gardeners would need a rather large plot of land to establish this edible landscape, but for those with the space, it would be worth the extra effort.
