Landscape Transcripts is the first English-language appreciation of the artworks designed for landscapes and public spaces by Makoto Yoshida. An unusual and innovative artist, Yoshida's seamless blending of Eastern and Western influences makes his work arresting and yet accessible to both the critics and public from all parts of the world. The magnificent photographs clearly reveal the range and variety of Yoshida's work.
A short introduction outlines Yoshida's approach to the style and value of artworks in the landscape and public domain, as well as the boundary between the public and the individual in shared spaces. Subsequent chapters examine recent examples of his work, sited in environments that are thematically classified, including stone landscapes, park landscapes, urban landscapes, architectural spaces, and other smaller schemes and artworks. The book ends with a short biography and a comprehensive listing of projects undertaken by Yoshida and his company the Art Planning Studio from 1987 to 1996 and earlier works from 1973 that he undertook as a leading member of the Environment Art Studio.
