Do not, however, look for insight into these fascinating plays in this edition, for it lacks completely the critical and editorial apparatus that enhances a scholarly work. No editor or compiler is even credited. In fact, the text is here clearly secondary to the illustrations. These illustrations are indeed fine, culled as they are from contemporary manuscripts, paintings, and tapestries; over 70 of the illustrations are in color, with 120 more in black and white, and the majority briefly captioned. Overall, this is merely a coffee-table book, full of pretty pictures but without any real intellectual substance.
