No McNuggets leave grease spots on the pages of Leonard's book for young eaters; she and Handelman join forces to convince children that the real fun food is carrots, pickles, bananas, and toast. A jelly sandwich and a plate of spaghetti come well smeared across youngsters' faces, but the emphasis is on fruits and vegetables, as depicted in the scene of a boy pushing a child's shopping cart on the lead page, looking as though he never got out of the produce aisle. Handelman's bright photographs make a game of eating; Leonard's text is breezy, but not always as free and easy, freighted as it is with messages: ``Creamy smooth,/a special treat,/vanilla ice cream,/is cold and sweet.'' Mostly, she tries to evoke some pleasurable aspect of various foods to prod children toward experimentation: ``Long and orange/and lovely for lunch,/a crispy carrot/is full of crunch.''
