About the Author:
James J. Meeker was born on a farm near Fort Worth, Texas. He grew up deeply connected to the natural world, reflected in the places he's chosen to live and the poetry and prose he's written. Jim is a natural lyricist, and his boundless affection, gratitude, and compassion are the bass line throughout his poems, or songs as he prefers to call them. Meeker's words reflect his journeyed, evolved relationship with God, the little boy who found comfort and wonder scrambling up ancient oak trees in Texas, and his deep aloha for the life and spirit of Hawai'i.
Galen Avery Rowell (1940-2002) was a world-renowned nature and adventure photographer and explorer. He was author/photographer of 18 books including Mountain Light: In Search of the Dynamic Landscape. Photo assignments and climbing expeditions took him to both poles and on more than 50 other international journeys to the wildest mountain regions on Earth. This is the only book of his Hawai'i photos.
Review:
"Meeker's poems celebrate life in the passionate, joyful images of the island paradise in which he dwells delighted the quivering and magic beauty of the fish, the wild, intoxicating fragrances of strange flowers. Always seeking Order in Experience, the Poetic Eye finds meaning in the loving connection between people and between the people and the earth. The truth is distilled into clear, tangible images, bursting with exuberance and the music of chants and ancient songs mixed with the music of the Heart and Blood. Meeker's on the side of angels." --Kris Kristofferson
"Galen Rowell ... shared his vision with - click - the release of a shutter, creating photographs as timeless, as stunning, and as powerful as nature itself." --Tom Brokaw
"All the way with J.J." --Ed Ruscha
