The fifteenth century was not known for good plumbing or iPods. What they got right, however, was the illuminated manuscript. Often many worked under the guidance of one to create a unified whole. But other times, toiling monks were given freer reign and they introduced individual variation that made the manuscript robust and surprising from section to section. This present collaboration between author and 12 international artist-illustrators seeks to bring back the spirit of the fifteen century -- minus stinky plumbing. Illustrations are embraced as essential to making the project whole. They spring up regularly, flouting modern day expectations of the short story collection. Each illustration was suggested to the artist by his/her muse, rather than directed by the author, and developed organically as artist married interpretive skill to technical expertise. Some of these humorous stories have appeared previously in literary journals and magazines while some are new. They have a multicultural and lgbt bent, but are straight inclusive. Humor = survival.
