About the Author:
Giuseppe Mazzotta is Charles C. and Dorathea S. Dilley Professor of Italian Literature and Culture at Yale University.
From Library Journal:
Inspired by current critiques of discourse, Mazzotta's study scrutinizes Boccaccio's masterpiece as an area of interference for medieval conventions theological, medical, legal, erotic, and rhetorical. The Decameron emerges as a book not only about play but in play, where traditional codes are always shadowed by their grinning parody and interpretation is always provisional. Although Mazzotta departs from a long tradition of examining medieval parody, his powerful readings of individual tales break new ground and revitalize Boccaccio studies. The exposition of the book's difficult argument is often fragmented, but students of Boccaccio and medieval literature will profit from this study for some time to come. Ronald L. Martinez, French & Italian Dept., Univ. of Minnesota, Minneapolis
