From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-7-- Don't look now, but it's raining rocks, and has been for billions of years--a light rain, perhaps, but certainly not slow. From the Great Extinction of 65 million years ago to the stony visitor that thundered into the Donahue family's Connecticut home in 1982, Lauber shows how comets, meteors, and asteroids have affected us, our planet, and our solar system, in large and small ways. She devotes a chapter to the catastrophic "Tunguska Event" of 1908, mentions recent suggestions that Uranus is an agglomeration of comets, and that much of Earth's water may be of celestial origin. The illustrations, mostly photos and most in color, are particularly well-chosen: the famous hole in the Donahue's ceiling; a sequence showing Comet Howard-Koomen-Michels plunging into the sun; a stunningly serendipitous daytime shot of a meteor passing over Jackson Lake, Wyo.; and more. Although several other books on the subject are in print, this makes a nice supplement (in a smaller format) to Lauber's well-regarded Journey to the Planets (Crown, 1982). --John Peters, New York Public Library
