She devotes a chapter to the catastrophic "Tunguska Event" of 1908, mentions recent suggestions that Uranus is an agglomeration of comets, and that much of Earth's water may be of celestial origin. The illustrations, mostly photos and most in color, are particularly well-chosen: the famous hole in the Donahue's ceiling; a sequence showing Comet Howard-Koomen-Michels plunging into the sun; a stunningly serendipitous daytime shot of a meteor passing over Jackson Lake, Wyo.; and more. Although several other books on the subject are in print, this makes a nice supplement (in a smaller format) to Lauber's well-regarded Journey to the Planets (Crown, 1982). --John Peters, New York Public Library
