About the Author:

Christel Desmoinaux was born and raised in Paris, France. She began to draw at the age of eight, and she later earned a degree in design. She has written and illustrated many books for children, including Mrs. Hen's Big Surprise. Christel makes her home in France.

PreS-Gr. 1. Little witch Marceline doesn't know about Halloween, so she's confused when all the neighborhood witches begin to pick pumpkins and prepare for the holiday. Luckily, Grandma is also a witch, and she introduces Marceline to a few Halloween traditions, such as the costumes and the jack-o-lanterns, along with some of the lore associated with them. Desmoinaux doesn't give the history of all of the traditions she mentions, and her explanations are cursory at best; Peter and Connie Roop's Let's Celebrate Halloween (1997) and Gail Gibbons' Halloween Is (2002) offer more solid information about the celebration. But many young children will enjoy following the enthusiastic Marceline through a basic introduction to Halloween rituals and their roots, captured in bright, cheerful pastels.
