Parents Kate and Michael are constantly telling Pushkin (their "big boy") to "mind Pierre." ("Can't she see that I do mind him? I mind him a lot!") When the family goes on vacation, the pet is pleased to find that the tyke is too little for some things, like fishing. However, when Pierre wanders off in a blueberry patch, he is rescued by the conscientious canine. Saaf utilizes a rich palette in his gouache illustrations, which are childlike in their simplicity yet render the details perfectly, from the cereal-scattered backseat of the family car to Pushkin's long-suffering expression as Pierre runs a toy train over his head. Ziefert and Saaf nimbly mine humor from the dog's narration; at a rest stop, he deadpans, "Thank goodness, we can go to the bathroom." Children will appreciate this fresh and funny spin on sibling rivalry.
