Kindergarten-Grade 3 Fang, a furry lop-eared dog, is not capable of protecting anyone from anything. He is too scared of his own image to stand alone against the big bulldog next door or the big kids on the corner. His owner, who picked him because he thought that Fang looked big and fierce, soon realizes that Fang needs encouragement to face the perceived dangers. In helping his best friend (Fang) overcome his fears, the narrator gently disposes of his own fears of the bulldog, the big kids, the ocean waves, and the unseen monsters that plague his bedroom during the night. Morrill's first full-color picture book is an impressive beginning. His illustrations are realistic and add subtle hints of the little boy's inner emotions. Particularly endearing is the portrayal of the young boy drawing bed sheets around himself and his stuffed bear under the bed while ``the big thunder booms.'' Illustrations are framed, giving each a sense of importance and giving the book a finished touch. This is a warm and memorable story that gently shows the love between a boy and his dog as well as a boy gaining self-assurance that helps him ``chase the monsters away.''
