From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-6-- A balanced blend of description and realistic dialogue help move this light novel smoothly along. Steve Hyatt is a self-proclaimed know-it-all. His family is one of several staying at Vermont's Potter's Lodge for the summer, where Steve manages to offend nearly everyone. One day he realizes it's time to retreat from his arrogant ways, so he decides to have a kids' talent show. Since Steve doesn't want to be director, a newcomer, Fred, takes the lead; however, Fred's ideas about costuming and staging are sure to end in disaster and embarrassment for everyone. Steve finally relents and tells the others how the performance can be improved; ironically, the only flop in the show is his dog-training act. Steve's "always right" attitude is depicted without overpowering the story; minor characters each have their own niche and complement the main one--although Steve's change is a bit sudden. The moral of "thinking before acting" is clear. A good camp story for readers who liked Barbara Parks' Buddies (Knopf, 1985). --Bonnie L. Raasch, C. B. Vernon Middle Sch . , Marion, IA
