From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-9 ``Prove your worth'' is the theme of JoBob's story. In order to de fine his self-esteem, this 14 year old se cretly trains Blue, a non-descript Pinto jumper. As JoBob triumphs in horse shows, he gains approval from his fel low horsemen and alienates his critical father. The expected confrontation oc curs when he refuses to aid his father in cock fights, and his father takes re venge by selling Blue. JoBob appears true to life, caught between the perfec tion of Blue and the agony of an uncer tain home life in 1950 California. The equitable balance between barn and home life will please horse fans. Diggs includes realistic details of training and showing, enhanced by esoteric termi nology. Readers who enjoyed Lynn Hall's The Something Special Horse (Macmillan, 1985) will find this book to be as satisfying. Charlene Strickland, Albuquerque Public Library , N.M

From Publishers Weekly:
For the first time in his life, JoBob Draper feels important. He is the only one at the barn who believes Blue, a misfit pinto, has the potential to be a jumper, and trains him secretly. When Slim, the stable owner, discovers JoBob's love for and success with the horse, he gives him Blue. JoBob begins to believe that all his dreams are coming true; adding to his excitement is his new interest in Mariko, who seems to share and understand his feelings. Then JoBob's hopes are crushedhis father betrays him, and Blue is gone. Bitterness and heartbreak burden him until finally, with the help of Mariko, he is able to conquer the pain and let go of it. Diggs uses precise language to convey JoBob's passion for Blue, combining dialect, sharp images and crisp detail. The result is an intense and satisfying story that commands readers' attention to the last page. Ages 12-up.
