"Storage," declares this gorgeously photographed book, "is about hiding things, or showing them off.... For storage is essentially a matter of what you have, where you use it, and where you want it kept. Any box can hide things, but one that conceals while beguiling the eye has more flair." In other words, don't just bemoan your lack of closet space, set to work on finding innovative approaches to hiding things in plain sight. In a room-by-room approach, this volume ventures far beyond the ordinary solutions frequently offered, instead showcasing stunning rooms decorated by noted designers, with the accent on elegant storage ideas. As the photos demonstrate, storage itself can bring interesting pattern and color into a room. The ideas here certainly have flair, from a Parisian library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves to camouflaged custom cabinetry that maximizes very limited space to hand-painted bureaus to a witty shelf made of wooden thread spools. The presentation is high-end but it doesn't necessarily take a professional designer or a lot of money to recognize the myriad of great ideas here. Even diehard packrats and confirmed clutterholics should enjoy leafing through the enticing images and may even be inspired to impose some stylish order on their own assorted belongings. --Amy Handy

Most interior design books and magazines offer two solutions for the storage dilemma. Arrange your dishes or pots or sweaters artistically on open shelves for the world to see or hide everything behind the doors of an antique armoire or custom-built cabinetry.

At first glance, the photographs in House Beautiful Storage seem to be more of the same. But, if you look again, there are ideas many of us can use:
