Seneca is the perfect horse, and when the young narrator meets him, she knows at once that he is the horse for her. Young readers will enjoy going along for the ride as she enjoys the privileges--and learns about the responsibilities--of having a horse of her very own.

From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 4. In this simple narrative, a young girl recounts the bond between herself and her horse. From the moment she first sees Seneca and he becomes hers, the joys and responsibilities of owning a horse are authentically and lovingly captured. The young owner explains how she cleans his stall and feet, brushes him, and takes him snacks. Seneca's attitudes are also revealed as he rolls in the dirt, hesitates crossing a stream, and meets her at the gate. The watercolor illustrations, some double-page spreads, are soft, sunlit, warm, and appealing. They are also very accurate in their depiction of the gear, the horse, and the young equestrian. Seneca is a sturdy horse with a kind eye, and the young girl is a dedicated rider. The special relationship they share is winningly conveyed in both the text and pictures.?Carol Schene, Taunton Public Schools, MA

From Booklist:
Ages 4^-8. In a simple picture book, a girl tells how she chooses a horse of her own, takes care of him every day, feeds him and grooms him, and rides him along the trails until he takes her home. There is no story, but for horse lovers the drama is in the quiet particulars ("I loosen the dirt with a curry comb, then hard-brush him all over"), and Baker's watercolor paintings show the physicalness of the girl's bond with her mount, whether she is using a soft brush on his face or galloping on his back through the woods and fields of the fall landscape.
