Grade 2-6-A potpourri of facts that correspond to every date in the featured year. Martinet includes a brief sketch of a famous person born during each month. For most dates, she cites current events as well as some items of historical significance. There is some attempt at international coverage, but most entries pertain to the U.S. Miscellaneous lists are inserted throughout, such as the toys of the year, awards given, or the most popular baby names. The emphasis on sports, space exploration, and unusual weather occurrences gets a bit tedious, and it's unlikely that anyone will read the books from cover to cover. However, the author does follow up on some incidents from one week or month to another for those who are interested. The cartoonlike watercolors add to the overall breezy tone of the volumes. Lack of indexes contributes to the impression that the series caters to browsers rather than to those searching for specific topics. The one annoying aspect of the books is the inclusion of teaser newspaper headlines, such as "U.S. Bombs Libya" or "Pesticides Found in Milk," with no dates or explanations. These titles will appeal particularly to those born in these years, but older trivia buffs may enjoy browsing through them as well.
