After polluting the Earth, humankind is now making progress toward polluting the heavens as well. Space junk--fallen-away parts of rockets; non-functional weather, communication, and spy satellites; and litter left by astronauts (some deliberately ejected from spacecraft)--is orbiting the planet. This litter is altered by collisions and explosions that multiply one or two large objects into many smaller ones, all traveling at high speed and capable of destroying rocketships and space stations. Litter crashing to Earth without completely burning up during descent endangers lives on Earth. And radioactive debris poses even more of a hazard. Space Junk outlines these problems and presents some of the solutions being studied by scientists. This is an important book, as it raises questions that must be addressed as the space program continues.
