This history of baseball's post-season classic from its inception in 1903 through the 1989 Series is presented in individual narratives arranged in chronological format. The treatment is balanced, with equal attention given to the memorable (e.g., the 1975 Boston vs. Cincinnati struggle) as well as less illustrious contests. The most distinctive feature of an otherwise orthodox text is an informative introductory section on the origins of the event. Numerous black and white photographs add considerably to the overall quality. This work is comparable to Joe Hoppel's The Series (Sporting News, 1989), though purists might prefer the latter's inclusion of individual box scores rather than the composite averages found here. Nonetheless, a solid entry containing both reference and general collection value.
