Jaqueline Rogers has been a professional children's book illustrator for more than twenty years and has worked on nearly one hundred children's books.
PreSchool-Grade 3-A standout charmer with a likable hero and a unique story line. Patrick Quinn Murphy knows for sure that he is special, for every year the whole town turns out for the Patrick's Day Parade. This year, though, he announces that he's tired of just green and would like a parade in all the colors of the rainbow, and his family explains about St. Patrick. Devastated that he is now "ordinary," he becomes rude and nasty, and spends a lot of time feeling sorry for himself. Finding no pleasure in his behavior, though, he finally makes amends. In his small voyage of self-discovery, Patrick finds the strength to be himself and the joy in doing just that, and realizes that there's no reward in meanness. O'Donnell is very successful in capturing the lilting speech of the Irish without making the book inaccessible to beginning readers, and preschoolers will be thrilled with the surprise ending. Rogers's pencil-and-watercolor illustrations portray the boy's freckle-faced impishness with freshness and vitality. She furthers the story by letting his dog reflect and sometimes foreshadow his feelings. Young readers will enjoy discovering the lush greenness of the Irish countryside, the quaint and crowded small-town streets, and the cozy life of family and neighbors who all know and care about one another. Present Patrick's Day with Eve Bunting's Saint Patrick's Day in the Morning (Houghton, 1983) and Tomie dePaola's Fin M'Coul (Holiday, 1981) for a Saint Patrick's Day story time- and a grand time it will be!-Jeanne Marie Clancy, Upper Merion Township Library, King of Prussia, PA
