From Library Journal:
This supplement to an excellent reference set adds 21 Anglophone writers, ranging from the anonymous author of Beowulf through Henry King (16th century) and Gilbert White (18th century) to such still flourishing contemporaries as Peter Ackroyd and J.M. Coetzee. The entries have the same organization as earlier volumes: 14- to 15-page critical/biographical essays are followed by a bibliography of works by and about each author. As usual, the well-written articles are mostly by academics, but there are a few freelance writers as well. There is a cumulative index to all volumes in the set, and the chronology has been expanded significantly, now going all the way back to the late 7th century, when it is presumed that Beowulf was first written down. Along with the Dictionary of Literary Biography (Gale, 2001), this work continues to be essential for any collection serving researchers beginning work on British literary topics. The DLB covers many more writers than this set and takes up a lot more shelf space, but this set is more selective, has the same high quality, and is much less costly. Highly recommended.
