From Library Journal:
This selection of the best poems published in 1989 is the third in a well-received annual series, though the editorship suffers somewhat by comparison to the high standards set by predecessor Donald Hall. There are many fine poems by our most eminent poets from Ammons and Ashbery to Wilbur and Wright, as well as exemplary work by younger and lesser-known authors. But the quality of the remainder is quite uneven, and the editors include too many of the tedious and murky prose poems currently in vogue. The selection seems too eclectic, wanting to include a bit of everything that gets to be called poetry in America, and thus errs on the side of charity rather than quality. An adequate but somewhat disappointing volume in a series that is of great value and deserves to be found in all American libraries.

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st printing. 283pp. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in Fine As New condition. "THE BEST AMERICAN POETRY 1990 presents seventy-five poets--ranging from a college freshman to the current poet laureate of the United States--published in the preceding year. Selected by the esteemed poet Jorie Graham, the poems were culled from nearly three dozen magazines in an effort to glean the best work being done today. Last year's edition of The Best American Poetry appeared on a bestseller list compiled from independent bookstores, prompting series editor David Lehman to hail 'the remarkable vitality of American poetry and its readership.' With comments by the contributors offering insight into their work, THE BEST AMERICAN POETRY 1990 takes its place in a series that is 'already an institution.' (Detroit News) 'An exhilarating compendium of talent with staggering diversity.' (Publishers Weekly) 'An essential purchase.' (Washington Post Book World) [jacket copy] "Now in its third year, this series again showcases the dizzying vitality of celebrated and little-known American poets. Graham salutes work that is singularly American in its 'signature ambition': 'both to happen fast and have the experience.' And the collection bears out her contention that the poems . . . sport distinctive voices, yet not at the expense of imagery or form. Forms are wonderfully diverse, ranging from a classical debate in Anthony Hecht's 'Eclogue of the Shepherd and the Townie' to Donald Hall's bitter lamentation 'Praise for Death' and Anne Carson's abstract but evocative 'The Life of Towns.' Moods swing from comic despair to mockery to elegy; something for every reader is here. Still, despite Graham's assertion that 'precision remained the watershed criterion,' it is likely that only devotees of Language Poets--those dismantlers of conventionally articulate speech--will fully appreciate the fruit that lies beneath the undeniable difficulty of some prose poetry and poetic experiments."--Publishers Weekly. Pristine hardcover w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding, wrapped in a handsome, intact jacket featuring 'Mirage' by Hans Hofmann. Quite presentable. Seller Inventory # RUB2883
