From Library Journal:
This fine book by an expert on women's health (Menopause, DK, 1994) compares favorably with Dr. Susan Love's seminal work on the same topic, Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book (LJ 6/1/95. 2d ed.), and covers much of the same ground. A comprehensive guide to breast health and care, it contains advice and information on breast anatomy, self-examination, breast feeding, the breast as a sexual organ, cosmetic surgery, developmental changes in the breast?both benign and threatening?and diseases of the breast and their treatment. Stoppard is particularly thorough regarding the latter topic, comprehensively discussing the early discovery and treatment of breast cancer. Her explanations of the various options available, based on the latest research, are presented in simple language accompanied by the kind of superb illustrations for which DK is famous. One small flaw, however: women over the age of 45 or 50 have breasts, too, but you'd never guess that from the photos of all the young lovelies presented here. That caveat aside, this book should be in every library along with Love's and other authors' works.?Audrey Eaglen, Brecksville, Ohio

From Booklist:
Stoppard's comprehensive work covers breast myths and realities, breast physiology, breast care, breast-feeding, cosmetic breast surgery, and breast changes, benign and malignant. In "The Sexual Breast," Stoppard considers breasts as sex symbols, as the objects of changing fashions and ornamentation, and as an erogenous zone. Of most crucial interest, of course, are the segments on breast cancer and treatment, which relay valuable information on risk, protective factors, prevention, detection, diagnosis, grading, staging, and prognosis. Turning to treatment options, Stoppard discusses alternatives to breast loss and a bill of rights for those with malignancies as well as radiation and chemical and hormonal adjunctive therapies. The profusion of full-color illustrations, including two pages of simple postmastectomy exercises, helps ensure wide acceptance of Stoppard's effort. Whitney Scott
