Divided into 24 lessons, this book makes it easy to learn about a particular aspect of your iMac in depth during a single sitting. The author explains a feature in general terms first and then explains how to accomplish specific tasks. (It's easy to refer back to these stepped procedures later.) This approach works well for Quicken, Internet connectivity, iMac customization, and other pieces of the system, but AppleWorks coverage seems scanty: only 20 heavily illustrated pages deal with this important productivity suite. The book also would be better if it explained simple networks.
Sams Teach Yourself the iMac in 24 Hours earns points by embracing the iMac's more powerful features in addition to its fundamentals. The author explains the contents of the System Folder and provides an appetite-whetting introduction to AppleScript programming. --David Wall
