From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-6?It seems un-Christian to cavil at this lovely collection of details from 14th-17th century paintings of Gospel episodes, accompanied by appropriate snippets from the King James Version of the Bible. The pictures are indeed enchanting, depicting fancy dress, jewel colors, drapery in mazelike folds, and faces set like alabaster or soft with time. There is, however, an odd imbalance in this "life": it has a beginning and an end, but no middle. Six pictures focus on the 30 years before Christ's public ministry and almost as many focus on his very last days. His actual ministry is reduced to two events: the wedding at Cana and the cleansing of the Temple. The text allows one admonition, "Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand," to stand for Jesus's whole message. And while the narrative briefly asserts "...he has risen," the painting?a Deposition?shows only a very dead body. A final section serves as an index to the complete?if very reduced?works of art, with some information on them. There's not enough depth here for older readers, but younger children may be baffled by the inconsistencies (e.g., the physical appearances of Jesus and Mary, which vary quite a bit from painting to painting). Madeleine L'Engle's The Glorious Impossible (S.&S., 1990) is still a tough book to beat.?Patricia (Dooley) Lothrop Green, St. George's School, Newport, RI

From Booklist:
Gr. 5-7. Illustrated with artwork from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and using the words of the King James Version of the Bible, this handsome volume, which offer a mix of religion and fine art usually seen in adult books, follows the life of Jesus Christ. Each of the full-page pictures depicts a particular event, beginning with the Annunciation and ending with the Ascension, but there's a long break between the marriage at Cana and the Last Supper. Among the artists represented are Botticelli, El Greco, and William Blake. Postage-stamp-size reproductions of the pictures appear at the book's conclusion, where the title of each painting, the painter, and a some brief notes about it are appended. Ilene Cooper
