From Booklist:
Ignore the gimmick of matching recipes to holidays such as Jefferson Davis' birthday or the Rayne, Louisiana, frog festival. Because, underneath the traditional and slightly off-center occasions, Schulz, best known as a collaborator of the late Bert Greene, selects over 100 dishes that best reflect America's melting-pot heritage. Divided initially by seasons, then by months, and with appropriate commentary, each holiday is paired with at least one recipe. Irish coffee marks Saint Patrick's Day; grilled shrimp and sausages on red, red rice goes with Father's Day; hot and sour garlic-braised eggplant are for Diwali, a Hindu festival; and Pand lymouth succotash commemorates Forefather's Day. Schulz's ideas occasionally become unwieldy; nonetheless, his is an excellent beginning reference to some more unusual celebrations and their foodstuffs. Barbara Jacobs
From Library Journal:
Schulz is the author of a number of cookbooks, including America the Beautiful Cookbook ( LJ 11/15/90) and As American as Apple Pie ( LJ 2/15/90). The latest addition to his Americana "miniseries" is a seasonal compilation of various festivals, birthdays, holidays, and other celebrations, each with an appropriate recipe. It's an eclectic array, with food events ranging from Gilroy's well-known Garlic Festival (Roasted Garlic-and-Leek Chowder) to the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival (Reuben Sandwich) and holidays from the mainstream to more obscure dates, such as Luther Burbank's birthday (Ultimate Mashed Potatoes).
