While honoring the classic traditions in wine making, classifications, etc., Clarke proposes that somewhat younger wineries representing excellence and innovation be recognized as new classics. After reviewing the great wines of Europe and contemporary wine-making components (soil, climate, procedures), he profiles 23 U.S., 24 Australian, eight New Zealand, and 15 European wineries and wine makers. His proponency of Australian wines gives them overdue, well-deserved recognition. While his selections are opinionated, Clarke is an inspired wine reviewer enthusiast. The abundant photo s are truly beautiful, but the maps are not always helpful. Much of the information is available elsewhere though perhaps not in such an attractive format. Fans of Clarke's zesty writing and stylish, light-hearted approach will be interested.
