PreSchool-- A young girl introduces readers to the various animals at Greenbrook Farm. It's spring, so there are many new babies; she even has a new brother. There is no plot, but the narration gives a warm feeling of interaction. This is enhanced by the skillful, impressionistic paintings that are reminiscent of the work of Mary Cassatt. There are, however, some inconsistencies. Occasionally the pictures do not accurately reflect the text. For example, a nest with two baby birds is described, but three are shown. Also, the text itself can be misleading. In one passage, it states that the jays chase other birds away from the seed in the bird feeder. "Some of the birds fly away, but not the tiny hummingbirds." This gives the impression that hummingbirds eat from the feeder. Libraries will need to balance their need for a pleasant, bucolic look at farm life against this book's deficiencies. --Karen James, Louisville Free Public Library, KY

A little girl takes the reader on a tour of the farm where she has always lived, confiding her experiences with the babies in the various animal families and concluding with her own new brother. The text here is relatively uneventful, but the mild incidents recounted will interest young listeners. Using broad brush strokes, a relaxed style, and impressionistic tones, Graham creates an appealingly romantic effect in his luminous paintings (but someone should show this child how to give a horse an apple without imperiling her fingers).
