PreSchool-- Five vignettes that show the Guppies, the youngest class at a day care center, making music and animal sounds, gluing leaves and paper stars, investigating an inchworm, and running in the wind. The class is an appealing group of round, ethnically mixed cherubs, balanced as to gender, one of whom sports spectacles. Childlike text and realistic watercolor cartoons give the Guppies distinct personalities. Miss Betsy, their teacher, is smiling but comfortably rumpled, the ideal care provider. That's one qualm about this warm, attractive, lively presentation. Don't these children ever squabble, whine, get dirty, have accidents, or scrape their knees? Heavy-handed realism is not required, just a reminder or two of the less than angelic preschoolers everyone knows. Miriam Cohen shows how this is done in her school stories for primary readers. For reading aloud, or individual enjoyment with preschoolers, whether in day care or not.

Five half-pint realistic stories about a day-care group (the ``Guppies''), each genial episode making its small, wholesome point via demonstration: the toddler who naps in the morning is the only one who's wide awake at lunchtime; an inchworm is fun to hold, but will be happiest outside. Kids and teacher are at their best here: no spats or reprimands. Morgan's well-observed, sturdy little people are consistently cheery but not sentimentalized. An appealing, useful book.
