Editorial Review - Kirkus Reviews A generous assortment of hors d'oeuvres that strikes a happy medium between the sardines-on-saltines and the pickled quail egg offerings of other volumes. The organization is straightforwardly helpful: Cold Hors d'Oeuvres; Cold Vegetables; Seasoned Nuts; Cold Seafood; Cold Meats and Poultry; Pates; Cold Cheese Hors d'Oeuvres. The selection of ""filled pastries""--stuffed breads, turnovers, popovers, profiteroles, quiches, and phyllo--is especially well done; other attractions are ingenious cheese spreads (Greek salad spread with feta and calamata olives), a choice sampling of stuffed mushrooms, and hot cheese entries (using Bel Paese and Camembert) that go beyond the usual cheese puffs; Edwinn does occasionally nod (a recipe using Kraft's Olde English jar cheese; a hot orange marmalade-soy sauce-garlic dip whose purpose is unexplained); but overall this provides good basic recipes and especially interesting fillings.
